2007 USA Junior Olympic Sailing Festival Schedule
Sailors between the ages of 8 and 21 encouraged to participate for fun, friendship and to develop skills

Posted Sunday, May 6, 2007

Portsmouth, R.I. (April 30, 2007) - US SAILING has determined the 2007 schedule of its USA Junior Olympic Sailing Festival (JO) program. The series of 22 events held at sailing organizations in the continental United States and Hawaii begins in June and wraps up in Miami, Florida, in December with the "Orange Bowl," the largest event of the season that consistently draws over 600 young sailors from across the country.

In sailboat racing, it's important to get a good start-not just on the starting line, but as a young sailor. With support from sponsors West Marine, Gill, and Active.com, US SAILING's JO program is designed to do just that: give young sailors between the ages of 8 and 21 the opportunity to learn, enjoy the fun and excitement of competitive sailing, and develop skills for a lifelong involvement in the sport.

Now in its eleventh year, the JO program has had a tremendous impact on the growth of youth sailing, proven by the popularity of its regattas. The 2007 events are expected to attract some 4,000 sailors; over the course of its history, the program has drawn over 30,000 youth sailors.

Each host club selects the boats sailed at their event, but many will feature popular youth classes such as the Optimist, Club 420, Laser, Laser Radial, and high-performance 29er, as well as several windsurfing classes.

The United States Sailing Association (US SAILING) is the national governing body for sailing. Founded in 1897 and headquartered in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, the organization provides leadership for the sport of sailing in the United States. US SAILING offers training and education programs for instructors and race officials, supports a wide range of sailing organizations and communities, issues offshore rating certificates, and provides administration and oversight of competitive sailing across the country, including National Championships and the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Sailing Teams.
